There are two Pulau
Berhalas in Indonesia: one is in North Sumatra and the other is in Riau. The
one in Riau used to belong to Jambi (based on its historical record and
geographical condition), but starting February 2013, it belongs to Riau. This
small island, which is also one of the outer islands of Indonesia, has lots of
unique things to explore!
The nama Pulau Berhala often makes people wonder. They think that
the name has something to do with pagan or some traditional belief. In fact,
the island was named after one of the Jambi Sultans, Datuk Paduko Berhalo, who
was also known as Ahmad Barus II and whose tomb can be found there on the
island.
HOW TO GET THERE
Even though Pulau
Berhala is a part of Riau, geographically it’s closer to Jambi. So you’d better
go there from Jambi, not Pekanbaru.
Take a mini bus from Jambi to Kampung Laut, whose name is derived
from its location: by the sea and even on the sea. The ride will take you
around 2.5 hours. From Kampung Laut you can take a 1.5 hour speedboat ride to
Pulau Berhala
There are some
houses where you can rent rooms. If you like camping, you can also put up a
tent on the beach. Just choose the one that fits you best.
You can bring some food or simply order food from the villagers. Of
course bringing it yourself will be cheaper, but ordering it from the local
people is more practical.
WHAT TO DO
Located in Malacca Strait, this island is famous for coral reefs
including black corals (akar bahar). For under-water adventure lovers, various
coral reefs and many kinds of coral fish can be seen there.
If you’re interested in history and culture, spend some time visiting the tomb of Datuk Paduko
Berhalo and walking around the village. Chit-chatting with the local people in
the midst of their daily activities can be quite fun!
For naturalists, spare some time to visit the turtle conservation
area on this island. If you’re lucky, you can help release baby turtles into
the sea.
If you’re the adventurous type, you’ll be happy exploring every
nook and cranny of Pulau Berhala and other small islands in its surroundings –
Pulau Telur, which got its name from the fact that turtles like to lay their
eggs here, and Pulau Mercusuar – interesting to explore.
If you’re into stargazing, you’ll love the nights on Pulau Berhala.
The big granite rocks scattered along the beach and the clear, non-polluted sky
will make make it possible for you to enjoy the heavenly bodies even without a
telescope. Just lie down on a granite rock and spend some time stargazing while
listening to the sound of the waves. Absolutely amazing!
